Literacy Council Students

Become a Student

You need to take a few steps to become a student. Here’s what to do:
  • Come to the Craven Literacy Council office at 2507-A Neuse Boulevard in New Bern. We will help you complete the Potential Student Information form.
  • Make an appointment with the Student Services Coordinator. He or she will talk to you about the days and times that you can meet with a tutor. You will have the opportunity to tell him/her what you want to learn, why it is important to you, and how you will use the knowledge and skills you will gain.
  • Complete assessment(s) that tell us what you already know, and answer questions that will help us determine what skills you already have.
  • Wait for the Coordinator to contact you with the name of your tutor. Be patient – it may take a while to find the best tutor for you!

CLC’s students help themselves learn faster by doing the following things:
  • Remember why they are enrolled and working so hard to improve their literacy skills – for their children, their families, their jobs, their futures.
  • Meet with their tutors often – 1.5 to 2 hours every week. They come to tutoring sessions on time so they have more time to work together.
  • Study at home for 2-3 hours each week.
  • Remain patient. It can take many weeks to see progress, but it will come if you are dedicated to being the best student you can be.
