Who We Are
Craven Literacy Council provides literacy programs to adult residents of Craven, Pamlico and Jones Counties of North Carolina, where approximately 19,000 adults read at or below the third grade level. We are a nationally-accredited volunteer-based organization, delivering instruction to those who wish to enhance basic reading, writing, math and technology skills, and/or learn English. Whether through one-on-one tutoring, a small-group setting, an online curriculum, or virtually, our students and volunteer tutors work together to enhance the skills needed to be more productive individuals, workers, parents and citizens.
Literacy is a fundamental skill that affects every area of a person’s life.

Why Literacy Matters
When individuals the world over learn how to read, do basic math and use computers, they are more likely to lift themselves out of poverty, contribute to lower health care costs, and find and keep sustainable employment. It has been widely reported that a mother’s level of reading skill is the greatest determinant of her child’s future academic success.
A new study by Gallup on behalf of the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy finds that low levels of adult literacy could be costing the U.S. as much $2.2 trillion a year.
If you or someone you know wants to work to improve their literacy skills for any reason, we look forward to hearing from you.
