Our Volunteers Our tutors are a diverse group of volunteers: professionals, retirees from all manner of careers, parents, church members, teachers and even students. While their backgrounds, education and experience are varied, they all share one goal: they want to help someone improve their reading and writing skills. The Craven Literacy Council provides a specially designed training course to teach strategies for working with adult learners. Upon completing the 15-hour workshop, which is held many times throughout the year, you will be matched with an adult learner – an “each one teach one” approach to literacy training. Tutors and students meet once or twice a week to work on reading, writing and speaking skills. Each student receives an individualized curriculum based on his or her unique ability and goals. If you are interested in becoming a tutor, please call us at 252-637-8079, or e-mail us at [email protected]. |
What do our Volunteers Say
As for me, I am forever changed by the experiences I have had as a CLC tutor with CCC; I am humbled by the strength and courage these adults muster up and the fears and shame they overcome in order to achieve their dreams.
I am forever changed for the better and hope that you continue to shed light and learning on this underserved community.

Sometimes I think I'm too tired, or too busy...and then I get to my session where my student shows up in a big way, nailing his math, his reading, and his COMPREHENSION and you realize how worth it that little bit of time is. Watching a life change slowly but surely is the most amazing thing!
