Working to improve literacy in Eastern Carolina
Craven Literacy Council, founded in 1986, works to improves literacy in our community by providing free, individualized tutoring services to residents of Craven, Jones and Pamlico counties. Our volunteer tutors have helped hundreds of adult learners to achieve their full potential as individuals, workers, parents and citizens.
Our tutors are a diverse group of volunteers: professionals, retirees, mothers and fathers, church members, teachers and students. While their backgrounds, education and experiences are different, they all share one goal; they want to help someone improve their reading and writing skills.
The Craven Literacy Council provides a specially designed training course to teach strategies for working with adult learners. Upon completing the 15-hour workshop, you will be matched with an adult learner — an “each one teach one” approach to literacy training.
Tutors and students meet once or twice a week to work on reading, writing and speaking skills. Each student receives an individualized curriculum based on his or her unique ability and goals.
Studies show that student reading scores usually improve one grade level for every 50 hours of tutored instruction. That is just one of the many benefits of the “each one teach one” approach.
Perhaps the most important outcomes of the “each one teach one” approach are the everyday success stories. The excitement over reading a story to a child for the first time or deciphering instructions at work without assistance, or the triumph in ESL students’ eyes when they have successfully negotiated their children’s parent/teacher conferences or attained citizenship are just a few of the accomplishments students and tutors share.
